Much research was conducted in the human and social sciences on the languages, cultures and history of contemporary colonial societies. The same was true in Japan’s colonial empire: in Korea, for example, a desire to control the past meant that historical and archaeological research played a key role in that colony. The situation was different in Taiwan, where historians had no interest in Taiwanese society proper and focused solely on the island’s colonisation by foreign powers. The present paper explores this “colonial history”, meaning the colonial historical scholarship and research institutions established in Taiwan and Korea by Japan between the 1890s and 1940s.
